The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has sworn in the newly constituted Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA), with Dr Fred Awaah appointed as Chairperson.

Adams, who took over the reigns of the Sports Ministry in February this year, charged the body to pursue bold reforms and deliver performance-driven leadership across Ghana’s sports sector.

At a brief ceremony in Accra, the Minister expressed confidence in the calibre of the board members, describing their appointment as a pivotal moment for Ghanaian sport.

He noted that expectations are rapidly evolving and insisted the Authority must rise to meet demands around infrastructure sustainability, athlete welfare, grassroots development, private sector investment and digital governance.

“This Board is not here merely to satisfy a legal requirement,” he said.

“It is here to lead structural change and reposition the NSA as a performance-based institution that commands respect, delivers results and responds to the realities of a dynamic global sports industry.”

The Minister underscored the urgency of future-proofing the Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934), accelerating the rollout of the forthcoming National Sports Policy, and adopting a whole-of-system approach that reflects modern priorities such as commercialisation, gender and disability inclusion, data governance and international partnerships.

While pledging the Ministry’s full support, Mr Adams was unequivocal about accountability.

He reminded members that their appointment came with expectations of collective action and measurable outcomes. As Minister, he said, he would engage and listen — but would also demand results.

The inauguration follows Cabinet approval of nominees in accordance with Section 4 of Act 934, which mandates the establishment of a Governing Board to oversee the operations of the NSA and ensure efficiency.
