A furiously "Ghanaian debate" is about to begin - no numbers, no models, few facts, but plenty of emotions.
Plus some alumni meditation, if not dictation.
That the university system is near comatose will not even feature. What are the actual fund needs of universities that have been pushed to expand recruitment till they are bursting at the seams?
All this while a recruitment freeze has been in place and lecturer/student ratios have plunged into the abyss? Who has monitored the trends of government subvention to the universities?
Why have we so carelessly fragmented the administrative overheads and thereby increased them so significantly.
For example, from Atomic Junction to GIMPA could be one University of Ghana - one VC, one many other things. But we proliferated structures - for what?
The university system is in crisis. A serious fact based conversation must be had by us all.
I do not like to see fees increase. But someone must pay - who?
We say our economy has turned around, show us the evidence now.
Hope springs eternal.
