The Kingdom of Belgium has reaffirmed its clear and consistent support for the Autonomy Initiative under Moroccan sovereignty.
Describing it as “the most adequate, serious, credible, and realistic basis” for a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
The position was expressed on Monday by Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade, Maxime ovo88 Prévot, following his meeting in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
During the meeting, Mr. Prévot underscored that Belgium’s stance aligns with the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025.
He acknowledged the existential importance of the issue to the Kingdom of Morocco, firmly situating the Sahara region within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.
The Belgian Foreign Minister further stressed that he intends to act in line with this position on both diplomatic and economic fronts, noting that Belgium’s approach is consistent with international law.
As part of this commitment, Mr Prévot reiterated that the Belgian Ambassador in Rabat will soon be invited to visit the Sahara region.
The visit is expected to prepare and support several economic initiatives, including missions by Belgian companies and the organisation of trade fairs in collaboration with the three regional agencies.
On consular matters, Belgium clarified that its Consulate General in Rabat has jurisdiction over the entire Kingdom of Morocco without regional distinction, including the Sahara region.
This applies to both Belgian nationals residing in the area and those travelling there.
