It was a sad day for Serwaa Nyarko Girls as their hopes of reaching the One-Eighth stage of the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) ended in tears after Nsutaman Catholic SHS came from behind to snatch the spot.

Serwaa Nyarko Girls had looked set for a strong finish after taking control from the opening round, leading with 20 points ahead of Hope College on 17 points and Nsutaman Catholic SHS on 16 points.

‎Nsutaman responded immediately in Round Two, moving into the lead with 29 points, as Serwaa Nyarko Girls managed 21 points, while Hope College dropped to 15 points.

‎They maintained their lead in Round Three, adding eight points to reach 37 points. Serwaa Nyarko Girls moved to 27 points, while Hope College scored a perfect 10 to take their total to 25 points and win the NSMQ Star Prize for the Problem of the Day.

The gap narrowed in Round Four, with Nsutaman on 41 points, just three points ahead of Serwaa Nyarko Girls on 38 points. Hope College was just four points behind on 37 points.

‎But Nsutaman held firm in the final round, adding nine points to finish on 50 points. Serwaa Nyarko Girls could only manage three more points to end on 41 points, while Hope College remained on 37 points.

‎Nsutaman Catholic SHS thus books its place in the One-Eighth stage, despite admitting that the contest was their worst performance so far. The team says they had expected to come into the contest much stronger and will need to raise their level going into the next stage.
