A beans seller at New Ateitu near New Winneba in the Central Region, Rebecca Kukua, has recounted how she narrowly escaped an attack that has left residents fleeing the community for fear of their lives.
According to her, the attack has created widespread panic among residents, with many abandoning their homes and leaving the once-busy community largely deserted.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News, Ms Kukua described the situation as worrying, saying New Ateitu has virtually become a ghost town following the violence.
She appealed to the security agencies to intensify their presence in the area and take urgent steps to restore calm to enable residents to safely return to their homes.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when a group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, attacked residents and allegedly vandalised shops and properties belonging to natives of the area.
The violence reportedly left at least three people dead, while about 15 injured persons, including a police officer, were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
Following the attack, police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the situation and restore calm.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) subsequently deployed a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to strengthen security in the area.
