The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with the violent attack and rioting at New Winneba in the Central Region, which left three people dead and about 15 others injured.

According to a press statement issued on Wednesday, September 1, the suspects are Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.

The latest Police update revises the earlier figure of seven arrests and 19 injured persons reported after the incident.

The violence occurred on Tuesday, September 1, when about 300 people allegedly stormed New Winneba Township at around 10:40am.

According to the Police, the group, described as an irate mob, came from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks.

The mob allegedly attacked residents and targeted shops and homes belonging to natives of New Winneba, resulting in injuries and damage to property.

The incident is believed to have been linked to a land dispute.

Three dead, 15 injured

The Police said three people were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty following the violence.

About 15 injured persons, including a Police officer, were conveyed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.

The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed.

Police investigators also recovered one locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the scene.

The six suspects are currently assisting with investigations as the Police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify other persons who may have been involved.

Security tightened

The Police Command has intensified security operations in New Winneba to prevent further violence and maintain peace in the area.

Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, alongside the Inspector-General of Police's special team, have been deployed to the township.

The National Police Headquarters has also provided two armoured vehicles to support the operation and strengthen security.

The Police have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigations as efforts continue to restore normalcy to the affected communities.
