The MP-elect for the Akwatia Constituency has set his sights on uniting members of his constituency and to provide youth employment.Dr. Kofi Asare beat his closest challenger, Baba Jamal of the National Democratic Congress and Deputy Eastern Regional Minister in a closely fought election re-run in six polling stations on Tuesday. The elections left behind a polarized constituency, with a dawn-to-dusk curfew still in force. But the MP-elect is hopeful he will overturn the challenge. The soft spoken Dr Kofi Asare told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on Tuesday that he will work assiduously to revive the defunct Consolidated Diamond mine in the area to provide jobs for the teeming youth. He has also pledged to invest in education to provide the youth with more opportunities besides mining.“The land for mining is almost depleted. We must go beyond mining and we need to start with education,” he said.Dr. Asare described as “unwarranted” the “massive destruction of property” before and during the election and expressed the hope that the incident will not recur. He appealed to politicians to refrain from inciting their followers to violence. He however played down on threats of court action by the ruling NDC who claimed to have evidence that some four other polling stations in the constituency may have been rigged during the 2008 elections. Listen to excerpts of the interview with Dr. Asare in the attached audio.
