The Member of Parliament for Ellembele, Armah Kofi Buah, has asked government to pay particular attention to the development of Nkroful, the hometown of Ghana’s founding president, Kwame Nkrumah.
He said the celebration of Dr. Nkrumah’s centenary birthday provides an opportunity for Ghana to make amends for what he describes as the betrayal of the former president.
The birthday of Ghana’s first president is to be celebrated in a month but indigens of the town are not happy because they say government has done very little to improve the wellbeing of the people, Joy FM’s Central Regional Correspondent Kwaku Owusu Peprah reported on Thursday.
The people say although an unspecified amount of money was voted for the construction of a school and other facilities during the Ghana@50 celebrations, nothing has been done so far.
Mr Buah said Nkroful is suffering from the “cancer of betrayal” as he (MP) drew allusions to speculations that the former president died of cancer.
“Don’t let anybody deceive you that he died of cancer; he died of the cancer of betrayal and if you come to Nkroful you can see the cancer of betrayal,” he said.
Tourism
The MP wants government to look to making the town a major tourist attraction site that will attract some 20,000 visitors annually.
“By doing that [you] create jobs for our people who are [generally] jobless,” he stressed.
The area boasts complete communities built on a river, an old settlement that has attracted thousands of tourists from around the world over the years.
He expressed optimism the centenary celebration would not be staged in the capital city only but also the birthplace of Dr Nkrumah.
Mr Buah said there is a chance for government to create the biggest pan-African library that will attract people who are interested in reading about the visionary leader, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
But that must start, at least with repair works on monuments built in memory of the late leader.
