The Black Satellites needed a late penalty to draw their first game of the Under 20 World Cup.
The stoppage-time penalty from Yaw Yeboah was cruel to Austria, whp were on course to get a deserved win against the Ghanaians in the rainy conditions of Wellington.
It would have been the the first big upset of New Zealand 2015 but despite going ahead with a goal from Bernd Gschweidl, an inspired run into the box at the death made sure Sellas Tetteh's side got a penalty to level matter.
Earlier, Argentina played 2-2 with Panama to ensure that all teams in Group B are on a point each.
The Satellites next play Argentina on Tuesday.
Ghana starting XI: Lawrence Ati (GK); Emmanuel Ntim, Owusu Bempah (C), Godfred Donsah, Samuel Tetteh, Asiedu Attobrah, David Atanga, Joseph Aidoo, Yaw Yeboah, Benjamin Tetteh, Patrick Asmah.
