Angry protestation by commercial drivers in Kumasi will have no effect on the decision of the Metropolitan Assembly to go ahead with relocation plans.
The relocation from Kejetia bus terminal became necessary after the area in 2013 became prone to fire outbreaks which culminated into loss of properties.
The Kumasi Mayor insists the drivers will be relocated from Kejetia to Race Course to pave way for contractors to begin a grand plan to redevelop Kejetia.
Kojo Bonsu found the drivers' protest surprising because out of 24 transport unions in his jurisdiction, 23 have signed on to the plan agreeing to the relocation.
But the drivers are now resisting the relocation. According to a driver, their leaders have been bribed to accept the KMA’s plan to relocate.
The angry drivers abandoned their taxis to register their displeasure.
Dressed in popular colors of protest-red and black- the drivers chanted and waved anti-relocation and anti-Kojo Bonsu placards in the streets of Kejetia.
Luv FM’ Erastus Asare Donkor reports that about 200 commercial drivers have joined in the protest.
The drivers say the new location at Race Course is 'infested' with robbers and criminals.
It will be unsafe to move there, they argue.
While the exercise of their democratic right went on, their customers, commuters watched the parked vehicles with a sense of confusion, hoping the Tuesday morning nightmare will end.
They faced a tough time in search for alternative means of transport to work and other places.
The drivers who are fighting the KMA, also diverted some energy to block attempts by their dissenting colleagues to make money out of the strike.
Some drivers were prevented from loading disenchanted passengers.
“Get down, get down”, the angry drivers banged on loading vehicles, threatening their ‘traitor’ colleagues and calling them names
