A One-week memorial service for the more than one hundred and fifty Ghanaians who lost their lives in the twin fire and floods disaster that hit Accra is currently underway.

A three-day national mourning declared by President John Mahama last week, ends today with the an inter-faith, inter-denominational National Memorial Service at the forecourt of the State House.

The service started at 8:30am.

In attendance are the president, Joh Mahama, and his wife, Lordina Mahama, Vice-president Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, Minister of state, opposition politicians, notably, Nana Akufo-Addo and running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the clergy and some bereaved families.

Archbishop Duncan Williams prayed for the souls of the more 150 citizens who lost their lives - many of them through the fire ignited as a result of fuel spillage on the flood waters. 

A similar service was held at the Flagstaff House Monday to begin the three-day national mourning for the victims.

The solemn event, which was led by Vice-President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, ministers of state, personnel of the security services, the clergy and representatives of political parties.

Today's event, which was scheduled to be held at the precincts of the Goil Service Station where a fire disaster claimed the lives of hundreds was changed to the State House in a last-minute statement from the Flagstaff House.

The Christian Council of Ghana will also hold a memorial service at the Osu Presby Church at 6pm Wednesday June 10 to pray for the souls of the departed as well as survivors.

General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, called on Ghanaians who may have the time to be part of the memorial service.

He said family members and friends of the deceased especially must make endeavour to attend the service.
