The National Sports Authority has indicated all is set for the country to compete in this year’s All Africa Games. 

This is despite claims by the various sports federations that funds for preparation have not been released.

According to country's sporting governing body, all necessary arrangements have been made and accreditation procedures are being completed to ensure the smooth transit of contingents.

"We have done accreditation by numbers, we have done accreditation by names now we are going to seal everything by sending the accreditation to Brazzaville for them to issue it for us," said Saka Acquaye, deputy general of the National Sports Authority.

Ghana must beat a July 15 deadline to register team Ghana for the games which will be held in Congo-Brazzaville.

"Our deadline is 15th July. We are working very hard to make sure that by the end of June we'd have sent everything to Brazzaville,” he added.

The back story

Ghana’s last participation in the 2011 All African Games in Mozambique was a disaster, having been tainted by organizational challenges and a fiasco in accommodation, transportation, feedings, flights and games accreditation.

The entire effort has since been derisively called the "Maputo Disaster" and it was primarily due to the late release of funds and corruption in the award of contracts, a situation the sporting federations fear will be repeated this year.

Apart from football who are able to fund themselves well regularly), the other federations - led by Richard Akpokavie (pictured holding microphone) - have for months wanted the Ministry of Youth and Sports to clarify its position on funding Ghana’s preparations and participation in this year's Games.

This followed a directive by the National Sports Authority to federations, on May 6, for the immediate stoppage of any pre-financing efforts to prepare their teams - even though government has perernially been unable to uphold its funding obligations.

“The Board has therefore directed that henceforth no Association should embark on any travel or project locally or internationally on account of the National Sports Authority if it has not received money to embark on any project,” the warning said.

The letter continued that the NSA is not currently in a position to fund Team Ghana’s preparations to the All Africa Games due to its financial status.
