Police have arrested a middle-aged man believed to be mentally ill after he burst into the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) branch in Ashanti region, destroyed property,spluttering blood on the floor.
The incident occurred Wednesday at the GCB branch at Kejetia in Kumasi known to be one of the most busiest banks in the regional capital.
A staff of the bank revealed that the man, well dressed, had come to the bank earlier in the day insisting that the European Union had wired him some money.
He gave his age as 34 and also claimed he is an Ashanti royal. The man also boasted he had links to National Security.
He was turned away by the staff who suspected he may be having mental problems.
When diplomacy failed, the man violently entered the bank at about 1pm smashing the glass counter of tellers and glass windows, witnesses told Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor.
He threw a huge stone dashing glass windows of the bank into piercing pieces.
Staff and customers scattered for safety away from the stone-throwing attacker.
His 20-miuntes rampage left splutters of blood all over the bank as he suffered deep cuts in his arms and wrists.
Private security at the bank overpowered him and handed him over to the police.
Shelll-shocked staff and customers of the bank were evacuated.
It took about two hours for blood, glass and stones to be cleaned up before business could resume.
Ashanti Central Division Police Commander, ACP Enoch Bediako says they are processing him for court.
The police say they will leave the court to decide if the man is indeed mentally ill and therefore in need of help not a jail sentence.
