Black Stars legend Osei Kofi argues that although Stephen Appiah is the best captain of his generation, the player shouldn't be called 'the best ever'.

Appiah, 34, recently announced his retirement, bringing to an end a career which saw him rise through the ranks to become one of the most respected skippers on the continent.

The former Juventus and Fenerbahçe midfielder led Ghana to its maiden World Cup in 2006 and followed it up by leading the team in 2010, too.

These achievements, Osei Kofi said, makes the 'Tornado’ the most successful Black Stars captain in his generation.

“Stephen Appiah was one of the best in his generation, no doubt about that. But he is not the most successful captain for the Black Stars of all time. 

"I will choose Aggrey Fynn over him,” he said on Asempa FM’s Sports Avenue.

The great professor

Edward 'Naabanyin' Jonah Aggrey-Fynn, known by many aliases because of his varied talents, was a founding member of the Black Stars in 1958. 

Ohene Djan described Aggrey-Fynn as football's "gentleman strategist" whilst the late Henry Plange Nyemitei labelled him the “master tactician”. 

As captain of the Black Stars on an European tour of 1961, Aggrey-Fynn excelled as a leader and remained in command of the Black Stars until they conquered Africa to become the winners of the 1963 Cup of Nations.

He led the Black Stars to qualify for the first time to play in the Tokyo Olympics of 1964.

Aggrey-Fynn died in 2005.

On captaincy...

In a related development, the former Kotoko legend - now a reverend minister - also rubbished suggestions by the 2014 World Cup Commission of Inquiry that Asamoah Gyan be given formal leadership training at a recognized institution.

This comes on the back of the commission's recommendation that the Ghana skipper is unfit to handle conflicts in the national team, because the fiasco during the last World Cup happened under his watch.

“We are going too far in this country. The commissioners are not technical men so they don’t have technical eyes to tell somebody to go for leadership training before he can succeed”, Osei Kofi added.

He also hinted that the Justice Dzamefe-led commission overreached in many of their recommendations.
