Ghana legend Abedi Pele believes Asamoah Gyan could have a really big tournament as the Black Stars look to kick off their campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Following Ivory Coast's earlier draw with Burkina Faso, Ghana can go a long way to making a place in the quarterfinals of the competition safe in only their first game of the tournament with three points against Ivory Coast and Abedi Pele – who scored in the Black Stars 2-0 victory over Ivory Coast in 1996 – believes Gyan will play a big role.
"He has had a really good half season in France; he is brilliant on the ball and above all he will play without the pressure that beats him down badly when he is playing in Accra. It looks to me like the perfect setting for him to have a fine tournament", the Maestro told KickoffGhana.com.
Gyan has hit eight goals for Stade Rennes this season in the French top flight but his over-riding reputation in Ghana is one of a wasteful striker, even though he has an outstanding strike rate in the Ghana shirt.
He has scored thirteen goals in twenty eight games for Ghana but only two of them has been on Ghanaian soil.
But if his goals are the reason the Black Stars progress far in this tournament, he could go a long way to appeasing his critics.
