The Ghana Navy might not be part of troops in Haiti helping bring relief to earthquake victims but there is a Ghanaian naval officer assisting a US rescue mission.
The 38-year-old Lieutenant Commander Samuel Ayelazorno was part of a crew aboard USS Gunston Hall, a giant US naval vessel helping to ensure maritime safety and security in West and Central Africa when they were called in to help the Haitians after the earthquake.
Lieutenant Commander Ayelazorno sharing some of his experiences helping the distressed in Haiti said it’s been life transforming.
He said the team arrived in the capital Port-au-Prince 18 January and has since been attending to over 200 patients daily.
“I’ve learnt a lot of lesson,” he told Joy News’ Sammy Darko.
The ship, which is presently docked at the coast of Port-au-Prince, provides medical services for the injured and food and other relief items to the victims.
Captain of the naval ship Cindy Thebaud said the focus of the operation now is to use experts on board the ship to restore the confidence level of the Haitians.
The USS Gunston hall is expected in Ghana in March to start the African partnership station project at Sekondi.
