The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, DVLA, has started charging new rates for motor vehicle registration with very little protest from drivers and vehicle owners.
Following a parliamentary approval, and a directive from the Finance Ministry, the authority is now charging new fees for vehicle registration, drivers’ license acquisition and renewal of road worthiness certificates.
Vehicle owners will now pay GH¢2 for road worthiness certificates, GH¢10 for a change of ownership and GH¢300 to convert a vehicle to left hand drive.
Some vehicle owners who spoke to Joy News at the DVLA offices in Accra, said, government must channel the extra revenue generated into development projects.
Greater Accra Regional Licensing Officer Abraham Tetteh told Joy News the car owners have come to accept the new rates.
Meanwhile, calm appears to have returned to toll booths on Tuesday, a day after the introduction of new highway levies at various toll booths across the country.
Commercial drivers in particular were irritated about the new fees some of which are as much as five hundred percent above the previous ones.
