Commercial drivers in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region are demanding an immediate reduction in newly-introduced road and bridge tolls.
They have threatened to stop work and stage a demonstration if their demands are not met by next Monday.
According to Joy News correspondent, Eric Owusu Sae, the commercial drivers say plans are in the works to form a pressure group in 24 hours and have their leader meet with the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo to present a petition to him for the President’s attention.
They said they have no issues with the increases per se but do have an axe to grind with the government over the percentages.
“The kind of money the government is taking from us from our toll booths is so high that [we feel] the government is so insensitive to [us] the drivers,” one driver said.
The drivers said the government must rather mount more toll booths at places where there are none.
They argue that the current situation means the government is making a scapegoat of a few road users.
A driver mentioned for example, the Sunyani-Techiman road and said it would be inequitable for their colleagues who cover more kilometers than they do to have the luxury of doing several trips daily without paying the toll.
They added that if their suggestion is implemented in other parts of the country, it would be good reason for the tolls to be drastically reduce.
