The Ghana Police Service will this year recruit 2000 extra personnel.
Vice President John Mahama made this known when he interacted with officers in Accra.
The Vice President, who is also Chairman of the Police Council, said the government plans to increase the quality of policing through training and the provision of modern equipment including those for the collection of DNA data from crime scenes.
“We believe that the way to go is to improve the efficiency of the service by providing the service with the appropriate logistics. Therefore the next year and then moving forward, we are going to see a marked improvement in respect of the technology that is available to your policing and the logistics and the resources that are available to you,” Mr Mahama told the gathering of police officers.
He said work is currently underway to improve a forensic laboratory for the police service.
The laboratory will be fitted to be able to perform DNA testing, which will lead to the establishment of a DNA database, the vice president said.
“We’ll also push for the establishment of an electronic finger print into the database” he added.
Explaining why there was no recruitment into the police service last year, Vice President Mahama said inadequate accommodation was largely to blame.
The recruitment coincides with the lifting of a ban on recruitment into the Military.
