Residents of Gamenu in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region have made a passionate appeal to Government to come to their aid as bad roads and a ramshackle bridge cut the community from neigbouring towns.
Major parts of a six-kilometre stretch of road that links other towns cannot be accessed by vehicles, while a bridge over the Gbadagba Torkor River gets flooded when there is a heavy downpour.
Recently, some school children nearly drowned in the river while crossing the dilapidated bridge to school. The situation is discouraging children from attending school.
Pregnant women in the community are also unable to attend clinics for antenatal care either due to the bad roads or broken bridge.
Assembly man for the Area, Yatsorwu Samuel, says authorities are yet to come to their aid despite bringing the challenges of the women and children in Gamenu to their attention.
“I tried my best; I’ve been writing letters to the Assembly for the past three years for action but the request have still not been approved. They know about the situation,” the Mr Yatsorwu said.
Community members have made a passionate appeal to Government to construct an access road to the community and also construct the bridge to enable school children and pregnant women especially access the basic amenities outside of the community.
