Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood is initiating disciplinary action against judges captured on video collecting bribes in the biggest ever scandal to hit the judiciary.
The Judicial Council will be investigating the judges at the lower courts, while those in the High Courts will require the President to instruct the Chief Justice to set up a committee to look into the conduct of the judges.
Managing Partner at the Bentsi Enchill Letsa and Ankomah law firm Ace Ankomah says disciplinary process against High Court judges and above is “elaborate”.
“The constitution takes it completely out of the hands of the straight out pure judiciary system” he said on Joy FM's Super Morning Show Wednesday.
Some of the high-profile judges implicated cited are Justice Essel Mensah, Justice Charles Quist, Justice Peter U. Dery of the Human Rights Court and Justice John Ajet Nassam known to have freed Alfred Woyome in the controversial 51 million cedi judgment debt scandal.
Already many of the implicated judges have applied for an injunction to stop the results of two years of undercover investigation compiled into a documentary from being aired.
Justice Obimpe and Justice Charles Quist are reported to have collapsed after they were summoned by the Judiciary Council after it received a petition from Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
One of them collapsed upon seeing the video; the other suffered a mild stroke as a result.
Both are in hospital here in Accra and are receiving treatment as the Judicial Council looks to get to the bottom of this scandal.
The council is meeting and is expected to issue a statement on the matter later today.
More soon.
