The Tema Regional Police Commander, ACP Augustine Gyaning, says his outfit has very little to do with the congestion at the Ashaiman police cells that led to two deaths.
Even though he deeply regrets the death of the two suspects in custody on Sunday, he noted that once people are bent on engaging in criminal activities in the vicinity, the only place where they can be kept is in police custody.
“We continue to decongest the cell and we continue to arrest criminals… The thing is that some people continue to commit crimes, especially heinous crimes like robbery and other things. When we get them, there is no way you we can say the person should be granted bail to go home,” ACP Gyaning explained to Citi News.
His statements come just two days after the two suspects died of suspected exhaustion due to excessive heat.
Five others were admitted at the Tema Regional Hospital after they fell unconscious.
His outfit managed to arrest one of four armed robbers Monday night after a gun battle.
ACP Gyaning further explained, “Do we say that the cell is full so we should release this new criminal to go? That is the situation we all find ourselves in,” he lamented
“It is not our wish to have people in cells. We will wish that we don’t have anybody in cells so that they don’t give us problems."
The four armed robbers attacked residents of Community 18 in Tema, but the police patrol team, according to ACP Augustine Gyaning, was on hand to prevent them from wrecking havoc.
After the deadly gun battle, two of the armed robbers were shot dead and the other escaped.
