The Gbewaa Youth Association, made up basically of supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has staged a demonstration against the Tamale Municipal Chief Executive.
The group is accusing Abdulai Friday of treating them with scant regard and failing to create jobs for them – contrary to promises made them by the NDC during the campaigns for the 2008 elections.
Speaking on the sidelines of the demonstration, the Deputy Secretary of the group, Saibu Abdul-Rahman told Joy FM’s Northern Regional Correspondent, Mahama Shaibu, that members of the association expected immediate and tremendous improvements in their lives consequent to the coming into power of the NDC.
But their hopes, he claimed, have been frustrated and dashed by the Tamale MCE whom he accused of distributing lucrative jobs, contracts and other opportunities among the top echelons of the party in the region while ignoring them who fought tooth and nail to bring the party to power.
“We need jobs, we can’t sit idly. We know some people in NDC having three, four contracts while the youth are not having even one, even one contract we cannot have, since we voted them to power, up till date we don’t have one contract to execute,” he fumed.
Asked what the next line of action of the GYA will be if their grievances are not addressed, Abdul-Rahman said, “our next action (will be) to demolish or destroy NDC properties in Tamale here, we are not going to sit down for them to cheat us.”
Asked again if he was aware that it is an offence to destroy properties, he retorted that “it is an offence for the party people to look down upon us. It is a promise, they promised that they will give us jobs and we need the jobs now.”
Receiving the petition from the demonstrators on behalf of the MCE, the Regional Co-ordinating Director, J.M. Dasaana assured the group that their grievances will be forwarded to the appropriate quarters for redress.
He appealed to the youth to back down on their one-week ultimatum, arguing it was not feasible for their concerns to be addressed in such a short time.
