A mob of angry residents of Kwanfifii, near Nkawie in the Ashanti Region, has lynched one person and severely injured two others in connection with a highway robbery that claimed one life and left six others with gunshot wounds.
Police however say the three are not linked to Tuesday morning’s highway robbery incident in the area, though they were on goat-stealing operation.
Three masked armed men and a female attacked motorists in the early hours of today, killing one woman and inflicting gunshot wounds on six others on the Kumasi-Sefwi Road.
A young woman was seen sitting at the Nkawie Police Station, crying for her young sister, 28-year-old Vida Amoani who was shot in the head by the suspected highway robbers.
“I’m looking for my sister, we live at Kroso and she left to trade and I learnt their vehicle was attacked by robbers. They wouldn’t even wait and started shooting, and they’ve killed my sister,” she cried out.
Victims of the robbery describe their assailants as four masked gun-wielding individuals believed to be of Fulani descent, one of them a woman.
They shot indiscriminately at four commercial vehicles whose drivers ignored orders to stop.
Twenty-eight year-old Vida Amoani, who sat right behind the driver was hit by a bullet in the head, after it missed the driver who was the main target.
A driver recounted that four other people were wounded.
“I stopped the vehicle when they asked me to but the woman amongst them shot through my windscreen and injured a man who was sitting close to me on the front seat,” he said. “Other vehicles did not stop and they shot through killing one lady and injuring others. They took all our monies and asked me to send the injured to the hospital”.
The robbers disappeared into the bush where they shot two more people who were working on their farms.
Enraged residents of Kwanfifii and surrounding villages mounted a search and caught three people they suspected were behind the highway robbery.
They lynched one but police rescued the other two.
Regional Deputy Commander, ACP Ampofo Duku, tells Luv News the three goat thieves are victims of circumstances.
“They shot at four vehicles but all of them managed to run away with their damages, with the exception of one TD, that they managed to get the driver to stop. We learn one of the robbers was a woman and she was the one who shot a thirty-year-old woman in the forehead. But the people who were brought to the police station beaten were not connected to the highway robbery,” he said.
