The only Ghanaian among the 114 passengers and crew on board the Kenyan Airways Boeing727 plane which crashed without survivors in southern Cameroon last Saturday is Mr. Everest Fiifi Selby.
Mr Selby, 39, is a lawyer and former Senior State Attorney, who was employed three months ago by the Commonwealth Human Rights Commission.
The identity of Mr Selby was disclosed to the Daily Graphic by Nana Kwaw Arhin 11, the Chief of Okodo in the Nkusukum Traditional Area in the Central Region and elder brother of Selby’s.
Nana Arhin, popularly mown as "Joe Ringo", is a former Chairman of Premier League side Swedru All Blacks. He said a sibling called the family to break the sad news to them last Monday.
He said Selby left London last week on an official assignment for the Commonwealth Human Rights Commission in South Africa.
While in South Africa, he was asked to proceed to Botswana on another assignment on behalf of the Commission. He therefore boarded the Kenyan Airways flight in South Africa on Saturday, only to encounter the tragedy.
Selby completed his law education at the University of Ghana in 1994 and joined the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in Takoradi.
He was a product of the Swedru International School (SWIS) at Agona Swedru, and Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast. He was the sixth child of the late Mr J.W. Selby, a former Central Regional Director of Education, and Mrs Matilda Selby, a retired Assistant Director of Education.
Rescuers reached the Boeing 727 in a swamp in the dense rain forest of the Cameroon last Monday night and announced later that there were no survivors.
