The University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa in partnership with a private company has developed a technology which will replace the use of mercury in the mining of gold. The Government has given its backing for the use of the technology and has provided a subsidy to enable many small-scale gold miners, popularly called galamsey operators to acquire it.The galamsey operators use mercury in extracting gold from the ore, causing many environmental and human hazards.Menart Geo-ventures partnered the University in developing the technology.Charles Abbey of Menart Geo-ventures tells Joy Business galamsey operators are fast welcoming the technology. The whole kit costs GHc1,000 but the government has subsidized the chunk of the amount reducing it to GHc300.The kit was on display at the recent European Union mining exhibition in Accra.Source: Joy Business/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
