A group of Persons With Disability (PWDs) visited the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital to ascertain how far the hospital has gone with the provision of facilities for PWDs under the Disability Law.The Civic Response and Integrated Action Development Initiative organised the visit as part of its social accountability project.During an interaction with the press after the visit, the PWDs said the hospital lacked adequate facilities for the physically challenged. The group therefore called the Government to provide such facilities to enable the physical challenged to obtain health care.It said the hospital had numerous staircases, which was a hindrance to the physically challenged, particularly the blind and the crippled who had to struggle to climb the facilities. The PWDs said many of them encountered similar difficulties at health facilities in other parts of the country, citing that pregnant deaf women could not explain pregnancy induced ailments to doctors who did not understand sign language. The group appealed to the Government to allow PWDs who are not gainfully employed and could not pay the premiums to access the National Health Insurance Scheme.Mr. Paul Agyarkwa, Deputy Administrator of the Hospital, assured the group and the Civic Response and Integrated Action Development Initiative that their requests would be considered at management's next monthly meeting.Source: GNA
