A circuit court at Fiapre, near Sunyani, has remanded two persons in prison custody for attempting to steal cables belonging to Ghana Telecom and being in possession of instruments with which to commit crime.
Adama Ibrahim, 37, a watch repairer and Rashid Malik, 22, a driver, pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on June 12.
Osei, an accomplice, is on the run.
Police Chief Inspector Kingsley Berko told the court presided by James Owusu Gyamfi that due to rampant pilfering of cables in the Sunyani Municipality of late, some members of the Sunyani Neighbourhood Watch Committee and some officials of Ghana Telecom began patrolling the municipality.
On one of such patrols on May 25, as the team approached a place near Oti Yeboah Complex where new cables had been fixed, they saw Osei and Adama holding a tool nicknamed 'go-to-hell', while Rashid had a screw driver and a pair of pliers.
The prosecutor said as the team confronted the two,Adama and Osei managed to escape but Rashid was arrested.
Chief Inspector Berko said Rashid later led members of the team to the homes of his accomplices but did not meet them.
Rashid saw Adama near Sunyani Polytechnic but as they attempted to arrest him he jumped over the polytechnic wall and entered the campus but was arrested with the assistance of the students.
The accused confessed they were there to steal the cables.
