President Mills has counseled the military against indulging in partisan politics. He says the military must work harder at positioning itself as a state institution capable of playing its role of protecting the citizens without any political considerations.
President Mills was speaking at the Golden Jubilee anniversary of the Military Academy at Teshie near Accra.
“Your most sacred obligation is to protect and defend the constitution, the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ghana, our motherland,” he said.
The president entreated the trainees to put to use the knowledge they acquired during their training for the benefit of the nation and its people.
President Mills assured the soldiers that he’s doing everything possible to equip them well enough to effectively protect the country’s oil.
He said it is the intention of the government to expand and strengthen the Ghana Air force and the Navy so that they will be able to protect Ghana's oil and gas resources and also its maritime boundaries.
He said the government had taken steps towards resolving the housing challenges facing men and officers of the military, and assured that those measures will yield dividends in the not too distant future.
President Mills is also commissioning a two-storey dormitory for the soldiers.
Former president Jerry John Rawlings and Nigeria's former head of state, Olusegun Obasanjo were among a host of dignitaries at the event.
