Ghana’s former World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight Champion, Ike Quartey, has commenced work on a multi-million cedi hospital project at New Gbawe in Accra as his show of appreciation for what society had given him.
The Three storey multi-purpose project valued at 800,000 dollars will be known as Ike Quartey’s Specialist Hospital.
A group of journalists who undertook a brief tour of the project site were told the project, which commenced three months ago, was expected to end in August 2007 since all the necessary materials were in place.
Speaking to the GNA Sports, Ike Quartey said the project formed part of his efforts to give something back to the society which has nurtured him to his present state.
Quartey said the hospital will be furnished with modern equipment that will give the people of the community and the general Ghanaian public quality but affordable health care.
The boxer reiterated that the project will be completed in eight months time after which it will commence full scale operation.
Quartey, however pleaded with the appropriate authorities, especially the Government and the Ministry of Health to grant him some tax exemptions on the equipment he intends to import from the United States of America for the project to fully equip the hospital and bring relief to the people of the area.
