President of the American Chamber of Commerce, Mona Boyd wants government to increase its support to the tourism sector because of its viability as a major foreign exchange.
The sector is estimated to have contributed about 8 percent to GDP or 1.2 billion dollars in 2009, but Mona Boyd says the sector could bring in a whole lot more if given the needed support.
According to her, though the sector is quite capital intensive, the country has several natural reserves which when appropriately developed could be transformed into major attractions.
She was speaking to Joy Business at the maiden edition of the West African Tourism and Hospitality awards in Accra last Friday.
“Ghana is a beautiful country and is endowed with the natural respources they don’t really have to build too many sites. Every region has something that is wonderful,” she said.
Award winners on the night included Golden Tulip Hotel, La-Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Holy Trinity Spa and the Citizen Kofi Entertainment Center which took away four platinum awards.
