The Volta River Authority is set to spill the Akosombo Dam by the first of November. The water level according to the authority has risen to the brim. It is at 276.4 feet, only 2 feet shy of the maximum.
This is the first spill to be recorded in 20 years.
VRA Chief Executive, Kweku Awortwi said the authority will however undertake a gradual spilling to minimize damage to selected communities in seven regions likely to be affected by the opening of the floodgates.
“This measure is to ensure VRA is not forced to spill uncontrolled amounts of water in the event that the lake level rises above the maximum allowable level of the Volta Lake.
“This is also to provide optimum protection for the communities downstream,” he explained.
Mr Awortwi however appealed to communities living downstream the River to relocate to higher grounds.
