Okudzeto Ablakwa condemns footsoldier-phenomenon

Deputy Minister of Information, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has condemned the phenomenon of foot soldiers in Ghana’s body politic. Mr. Okudzeto who was delivering a lecture at The decade celebration of the University of Cape Coast House of Parliament Thursday on the theme, Mobilization of Ghanaian youth for nation building: The role of the tertiary student also urged the youth to condemn the phenomenon of foot soldiers and insist that political parties provide policies geared towards building the capacity of all youths in the country. Mr. Ablakwa indicated that young people should demand that every political party put together a "clear programme and implement same ostensibly aimed at building the capacity of all youths in their parties”. Mr. Ablakwa advised political parties to set up training units to equip students with the philosophies of the parties and to fashion out strategies to make these youth economically viable in between general elections. The deputy minister further proposed that the National Service Scheme should be amended. He said personnel who serve the nation in rural areas should receive about 50 per cent more monthly allowance than those who serve in urban areas. This is to serve as an incentive to drive rural development. The deputy minister added that the National Service scheme should be designed to also groom entrepreneurs for the country. These entrepreneurs, he posited, will be given a start-up package after their business proposals have been scrutinized thoroughly. Mr. Ablakwa encouraged the students to demand accountability from politicians and add their voices to any issue of national interest. Read the speech delivered by Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa.
