A trade unionist has advocated the immediate establishment of regional labour commissions through out the country to guarantee the safety of workers.
John Oppong, the Brong Ahafo Regional Industrial Relations Officer of the Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), expressed regret that the absence of such bodies have resulted in an upsurge of unfair termination of employment, particularly in the region.
He made the call at a meeting of members of the regional branch of the PSWU of the TUC, in Sunyani to discuss the new labour law.
Mr. Oppong said, "Because labour commissions are not set up in the regions, most workers do not recognize its function and go through unnecessary ordeals at their work places."
He urged employers to abide by the new law and to provide the necessary tools and logistics so that their employees could work effectively to enhance productivity.
Mr. Oppong advised members of the PSWU of TUC to obtain identification cards to enable them to benefit from the services of the union.
The union later elected six workers of the regional offices of various government departments as its new executives.
They were Kwabena Bennin of the Audit Service, chairman, Ernest Boateng of the Value Added Tax, vice chairman, and Frank Amofa of the National Commission for Civic Education, secretary.
The others were Mrs. Gladys Boateng of the Center for National Culture, vice secretary, Mrs. Angelina Ofei Duah of Volta River Authority, first trustee and Edward Boateng of the National Youth Council, second trustee.
Mr. Boateng on behalf of the executives thanked the members for the confidence reposed in them, and pledged their commitment to duty to enhance the development of the union.
