A convict serving a 30 year jail term for armed robbery last Sunday escaped from the Tamale prison.
Seidu Issahaka, who is also known as Yaro, is believed to have escaped through an opening in the prison wall.
Issahaka was arrested in January at Pigu, a farming community along the Tamale-Bolgatanga road after attacking passengers on a bus traveling from Tamale to Bolgatanga and was tried and sentenced by the Tamale High Court on May 21, 2007.
Prison sources said that two prison officers who were on duty at the time of the incident did not realise that Issahaka was missing until Monday morning.
A visit to the Tamale Prisons to speak with the Regional Prisons Commander, he was told the commander was busy and could not talk to anyone until today.
However, when contacted, the Northern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ephraim Barakatu, said he had received a report from the prison authorities that Issahaka had broken jail.
Mr. Barakatu, appealed to the public to assist in rearresting Issahaka, whom he described as a "notorious criminal and a danger to society."
A similar jail break occurred at the Tamale Prisons last year for which the convict has still not been found.
