A sixty-year old farmer, Nana Owusu, who posed as a Police officer and defrauded some people at Asankrankwa has been fined 240 Ghana cedis or in default he will go to jail for 12 months.
Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Albert Adiita, told the Tarkwa circuit court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that on January 13 at Domeabra, the accused, wearing a cap with the inscription; Police, at the back in the company of one Chief now at large, attempted to “arrest” one Kwesi Tabiri for stealing Chief’s money.
During the adventure, the suspect introduced himself as a “Police Inspector” based at Asankrangwa Police Station but Akua Salamatu intervened and pleaded with him not to arrest Tabiri.
DSP Adiita said the suspect demanded 90 Ghana cedis to make up for the stolen amount and as an inducement to “drop the case”.
The prosecutor said the suspect also demanded 20 Ghana cedis as transport fare and after collecting the money, he left.
DSP Adiita said the following day, Owusu and Chief went to Nyame Bekyere and met one Francis Akonum and this time introduced himself as Inspector Amu from the Asankrangwa Police, and that Akonum was wanted at the Asankrangwa Police for threatening Chief.
The suspect again agreed to take 100 Ghana cedis which would be shared between Chief and himself, while the victim was also to hire a motor bike to take them to Sewfi Asawinso and also pay 10 Ghana cedis for fuel, which the victim did.
DSP Adiita said the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, George Arthur, alerted the Police when he was informed which led to the arrest of the suspect at his hide out at Domeabra.
