Four women with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), stationed at Akanu but resident at Dzodze in the Ketu North District of the Volta region, have been arrested by the police at Dzodze over the death of their colleague, Prosper Sedziafa, whose body was found in an underground water reservoir on Christmas day. The immigration officers, who were charged with conspiracy to commit crime and murder, include Mavis Serwa Addai, Matilda Sarfo-Adu, Rejoice Awadzi and Kate Tamakloe. When the four appeared before the Dzodze Magistrate Court on Thursday, their pleas were not taken. The presiding Magistrate, Anthony Abebrese, remanded them into prison custody to re-appear on February 24. Prosecuting, Akwasi Asafo-Agyei told the court that on December 25 last year, the four conspired to murder one Prosper Sedziafa, also an immigration officer. According to the prosecutor, the four accused persons and the deceased lived in the same residence at Dzodze. However, on December 25, 2010 around 8:30pm, Mavis Addai went to fetch water from the underground reservoir and found the body of the deceased floating on the water. She raised the alarm which attracted neighbours to the scene to witness what had happened. The case was reported to the police who retrieved the body and sent it to the Police Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The prosecutor told the court that a post-mortem on January 24 this year indicated that the deceased died as a result of head injuries. He also had some cerebral damage, an indication that he was murdered and dumped into the reservoir, a development which led to the arrest of the four women and their subsequent remand into prison custody. At the time he was found dead, Prosper was in a standing position in the reservoir, which was about 12 feet, with swollen cheeks and eyes. His stomach was however normal. Police said the state of the body indicated that he had not been in the water for too long. The 29-year-old immigration officer lived in a rented quarters near Mac-Teteh International School at Dzodze with his colleagues. Dzodze District Police Commander, Akwasi Asafo-Agyei, who spoke to the Daily Guide, explained that colleagues of the deceased said they did not know his whereabouts until his body was found on that fateful day when one of the female personnel had gone to fetch water from the reservoir.
