A 45-year-old man is the grips of the law for allegedly impregnating his 17-year-old daughter. The suspect, Michael Agyapong, a mechanic at Abeka in Accra, is being held in police custody pending further investigations. The victim, an apprentice seamstress, is said to be four months pregnant.Chief Inspector Irene Oppong, Public Relations Officer of the Domestic Violence and Victims' Support Unit (DOVVSU), who disclosed this to Times yesterday, said Agyapong could be charged for incest if the investigations found him culpable. She said the girl was staying with her mother at Akyem Kwabeng in the Eastern Region until 2005 when she joined her father in Accra.Chief Insp. Oppong said the suspect had allegedly been sexually abusing his daughter since 2009.The girl got pregnant early last year and her father had it terminated, according to the Chief Inspector who said Agyapong admitted under interrogation that he impregnated his daughter.Chief Insp. Oppong said DOVVSU had so far received five cases of incest this year. She said the shelter provided for abused children only cared for those under 15 years.DOVVSU was therefore finding it difficult to cater for those above that age and she appealed for public support to cater for all categories of abused children.Source: Ghanaian Times
