Mr Simon Nyadro, Ho Municipal Advocacy Committee Chairman of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD), has called on churches and hospitals to engage the services of sign language interpreters to facilitate communication between them and the deaf.
He noted that the absence of such professionals tended to isolate the deaf from such institutions.
Mr Nyadro made the call through the Ghana News Agency in Ho on Friday.
He explained that many people with hearing defects stayed away from churches and hospitals due to communication barrier arising from the absence of interpreters and suggested that the deaf be involved when planning for public communications.
Mr Nyadro commended the Church of Christ in Ho for addressing the challenge faced by the deaf and appealed to other churches to follow that example.
Dr Archibald Letsa, a private Medical Practitioner in Ho, said patients, who attended his facility, usually wrote their complaints on paper for him and he also responded in writing.
