There are concerns about increasing rate of breast cancer infection among young people in Ghana.
Experts say 60 per cent of two thousand and sixty women diagnosed of the disease in the country last year are women below age 50. Around the world breast cancer is said to affect women of 70 years and above.
President of Breast Care International, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addae told Luv News most breast cancer cases are reported at the hospital late.
She says 70 percent of patients seek medical treatment when their condition has reached advanced stage making their survival very slim.
Though scientists have yet to identify the cause of breast cancer among women, issues of genes and prolonged menstrual cycle, among others, have been identified as risk factors.
Dr. Wiafe Addae says the situation gives cause for worry especially among women with family history of the disease.
She was speaking at official launch of the first ever Susan Komen Ghana Race for the Cure, the world's largest education and fund raising event for breast cancer.
The race which is coming to Africa for the first time is the brain child of American, Nancy Brinker who in 1982 promised her dying sister Susan Komen an end to the search for a cure for breast cancer.
The race scheduled for the May 25, 2011 is expected to witness the participation of over 5000 groups to raise funds for breast cancer education.
Dr. Wiafe Addae who is also Managing Director of Peace and Love Hospital at Oduom in Kumasi says the race will also be used to erase the myth suggesting any one diagnosed of breast cancer is heading for the grave.
