President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Hassan Tampuli as care-taker Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Thursday.
This was contained in a letter signed by Energy Minister-designate Boakye Agyarko dated January, 26.
Mr Tampuli is charged to act in that capacity “until a substantive CEO is approved.”
“As a care-taker CEO, you will not take decisions that have policy implications until a substantive Governing Board is in place,” the letter said.
He was asked to desist from taking decisions that "have policy implications until a substantive Governing Board is in place."
"You may refer such policy related decisions to the Ministry for prior approval," the letter read.
Mr Tampuli studied Energy and Environmental Law at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
He studied LLB at the University of Ghana and had his secondary education at Tamale Secondary School. He lives in Accra, Ghana.
Until his appointment, Mr Tampuli has been advocating for the respect of human rights in the country. He has served as lead counsel for people who have been unfairly manhandled by state institutions.
In September 2016, he fought for the release of New Patriotic Party (NPP)'s sympathiser, Fadi Samih Daboussi when he was detained by Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for some foul comments.
Mr Samih Daboussi allegedly published a book which functionaries of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) found offensive. He was accused of 'deliberately' insulting former President John Mahama in his publications.
But with the efforts of Mr Tampuli and other lawyers, the Ghanaian writer and journalist was released from BNI custody.
