Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR), the group spearheading the presidential campaign of the former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has dismissed claims it is responsible for the reported attack on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by unidentified gunmen Thursday night.
FONKAR says the reported attack was a ruse and a ploy by the campaign team of President J.E.A. Mills to win undeserving sympathy and court disaffection for the group so as to scupper the Konadu campaign.
The Ashanti Regional Chair of the NDC, Mr Yaw Owusu Obimpeh was reportedly attacked and the windshield of his vehicle destroyed by unknown assailants who opened fire on the vehicle near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
He escaped unhurt and reported the attack to the KNUST Police.
The regional Youth Organiser of the NDC, Kweku Boahene pointed fingers at FONKAR, accusing them of being behind the attack.
He told Joy News the chairman and some other executives had been receiving death threatening text messages from members of FONKAR after they declared support for President Mills.
He said the executive had been warned to stay away from the upcoming congress.
“On the 3rd of June, Regional Chairman received a couple text messages from the FONKAR people that they will kill him before we go to Sunyani and this is the manifestation,” he said.
But speaking for FONKAR, Mr Ernest Owusu Bempah said that not only was the claim a complete fabrication but the attack itself was a hoax designed by the opponents of Nana Konadu for propaganda purposes.
“We were the first people to go out there and make a report to the police in connection with our lives being in danger and I think this is something of a hoax that they are trying to use to do propaganda just to direct the arsenal on us,” he stated.
Mr Owusu Bempah said members of FONKAR are peace-loving and none of them would do what they are being accused of.
He wants the police to thoroughly investigate the incident and determine what exactly happened.
