The police are providing 24-hour security for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Yaw Obimpeh.
This follows the alleged assassination attempt on him a week ago.Chief Inspector Yusif Mohammed Tanko, the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti regional police command, who confirmed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic last Monday, said the security would remain in place until further notice.
Obimpeh, who is at the forefront of President Mills Ashanti regional campaign to be re-elected flagbearer of the NDC, had indicated that his life was in danger and needed protection ahead of the NDC congress in Sunyani this weekend. No one had been arrested in connection with the alleged incident, which happened at about 9:00.p.m. on June 30, 2011.However, the regional chairman has given his statement to the police who have already launched investigations into the matter.According to Mr Obimpeh, some used cartridges were found in his car, but the police were yet to confirm this. His assailants were said to have attacked him near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) when he was returning to Ejisu where he lives, after a campaign tour.
After firing into Obimpeh’s vehicle from the rear, the traumatised regional chairman said he managed to drive to the KNUST police station to lodge a report. The regional police took over investigations into the case, but no one has been arrested yet.Source: Daily Graphic/Ghana
