The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress has said campaigning towards the party’s congress could continue almost unrestricted.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the party’s constitution does not bar campaigning even at the congress grounds.
“By our rules campaigning actually never stops because even on the day of the elections, the last campaigns will be made by the various candidates immediately before voting so we don’t have any rules as to where campaigning stops.
“What rules we have put in place though is that when delegates are entering the voting area in the inner perimeter of the congress they should not come in the colours of any particular candidate,” he said.
Mr Asiedu Nketia however said delegates can enter the main congress “with generic NDC T-shirts” but “outside the stadium everybody can do [anything].”
Majority caucus
Johnson Asiedu Nketia further added that the opinion expressed by the Majority caucus in Parliament on Tuesday on the decision of former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawling to contest president Mills at the party’s congress does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the national executives of the NDC.
The MPs told the former first lady to stand down her decision to contest President Mills.
Mrs Konadu is said to have gone to Parliament to meet the NDC MPs with the aim of persuading them to vote for her at the congress.
But the legislators rather changed the conversation and asked the former first lady to back out.
Mr Asiedu Nketia said the MPs are entitled to their views.
“I haven’t assumed the responsibility of the [MPs] spokesperson so the Parliamentary caucus is free by our rules to engage in any debate in an unfettered manner,” he stressed.
Security
Meanwhile the party says everything has been done to ensure the congress ends successfully.
It said CCTV cameras have been planed in every corner of the Coronation Park, venue for the congress.
He said anyone with any ulterior motive will definitely be smoked out as security officials are on the alert to pick up trouble makers at the congress grounds.
Voting arrangement
There will be six polling booths at the congress for six groups of delegates.
Delegates from Upper West and Eastern Regions will be combined whilst those from Upper East and the Greater Accra Regions vote together.
The other pairings are the Volta and Western Regions and Central and Brong Ahafo Regions.
Northern Regional delegates will also be combined with MPs and other delegates.
