The Chief of Staff, Mr. Alex Segbefia has said that it would be easier for the NDC to win the 2012 elections, if the current president, Atta Mills is chosen as the party's flag-bearer.
Mr Segbefia expressed admiration for Atta Mills, saying that the President is a unique individual and is the one person who has not said anything that can be said to be an attack on anybody and his non-confrontational attitude has watered down some of the perceived tensions within the party.
He described as normal in any party some level of acrimony and backbiting such as has attended the NDC's flagbearer race.
Mr Segbefia felt that a defeat for President Mills would cause a stir around the country and send a message to the electorate that would be very difficult to overturn but he said the race was not about any individual, but the party.
Part of the reason for having an early congress, he said, was to give the party time to regroup and heal any wounds that may exist.
He reminded members of the NDC that unity played a key role in the party's 2008 electoral victory and they should strive to maintain that united front no matter the congress result.
Mr Segbefia seemed pleased with how things were going so far and in his opinion, the party had made history, deepened Ghana's democracy.
He appealed to everyone involved in the congress to watch their language.
