The National Youth Organiser of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh, has labelled the ongoing congress of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sunyani as a contest between the deceitful and the sycophants/hypocrites. The deceitful, according to him, include Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and her husband, ex-president Jerry John Rawlings, who he said promised Ghanaians they would not engage in a coup ever again after the June 4th uprising in 1979 but reneged on his word on 31st December, 1981. Kwabena Bomfeh added that the sycophants/hypocrites on the other hand are those who have supported and encouraged the former first couple since the coup in December 1981. Speaking on Peace FM’s current affairs show Kokrokoo Friday, Mr Bomfeh - who is popularly known as Kabila - stated that President John Evans Atta Mills and all his allies are part of the people he calls sycophants and hypocrites. He was commenting on the party’s congress in Sunyani to elect a flag bearer which started Friday. The past six months have witnessed a fiery campaign, amid insults, allegations and counter-allegations by supporters of the two contenders for the race. Nana Konadu and her supporters have claimed her quest to unseat President Mills as leader of the party stems from his failure to deliver on his campaign promises; failure to inspire the grassroots of the NDC as well as presiding over a corrupt government, among others. This situation, according to the former First Lady would make the party lose power in the 2012 elections. However supporters of President Mills also say the NDC has no chance of retaining power should Mrs Rawlings lead the party due to what they say are her past records of intimidation and victimization. The CPP youth organiser, during his submission, wondered why members of the Get Atta Mills Endorsed (GAME), who – together with members of Friends Of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR) – have supported and cheered on the Rawlingses irrespective of their atrocities against Ghanaians in the past were crying foul now that the tables have turned. Kabila further noted that instead of calling Rawlings and his wife to order, the party defended the former first couple for their every action. As far as he is concerned, the Sunyani congress is no referendum on the Rawlingses because he believes the outcome will not affect their status in the NDC as widely perceived.
