Ex-president John Rawlings has predicted doom for the governing National Democratic Congress for rejecting his wife at the Sunyani Congress.Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings failed in her bid to become the party’s leader and polled only three per cent of votes at the Congress held on July 8, 2011.Mr. Rawlings in his first public pronouncement after his wife’s defeat told the BBC on Thursday, the “party [and] the government [are] going to pay for it” sooner or later.According to him, research proved a year ago that his wife had 82 per cent chance of being elected as the flagbearer of the party, insisting, the humiliating defeat she suffered could only be the result of bribery and intimidation of the party’s delegates.“It was very disappointing” he stressed, claiming his wife had gone into the race based on the convictions and motivation by the delegates and the footsoldiers.Mr. Rawlings strongly rejected insinuations that he has taken the NDC party as a family property, snapping, that could only be the thought of “little minds.”He said as long as the injustice remains, he and his wife will still remain in politics.He did not say if his wife will go for the leadership of the NDC or set up a new party, but stated unequivocally; “Nana will never get out of politics; I will never get out of politics as long as injustice continues in my country.”“What my government is doing is they are perpetrating the ills of the past and that will destroy the moral fabric of the society and we have to avoid it.”Asked if he and his wife will campaign for the NDC in the upcoming general elections, he said: “We are taking a break and doing some serious thinking. She would want to finish her book and so would I.
