U.K. Minister for African Development, Mr. Stephen O'Brien on Saturday visited the offices of New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The Minority Leader, Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; Hon Shirley Ayorkor Bowtchey,Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Peter Mac Manu, Former National Chairman interacted with him and his delegation. He was accompanied by Peter Jones -High Commissioner of U.K. to Ghana, and Sally Taylor, Country Director of the Dept of International Development. The meeting discussed UK aid to Ghana and poverty reduction, biometric voter registration for 2012 elections and Ghana's democracy. The Minority Leader also spoke about the role of the Minority in Ghana’s democratic dispensation, human rights, corruption and use of oil revenues to bolster the economy now and for the future. The U.K. Minister urged the country to respect the rights of homosexuals. The Minister, a Conservative Party MP, appreciated the role of opposition in multi party democracy. The Conservative party itself was in opposition for about 13 years and came to power last year. Mr. Peter Mac Manu appreciated the visit and urged the UK government to interest itself in developments in Ghana particularly the upcoming biometeric register and general elections. He assured the delegation that the NPP is working hard to be elected peacefully into government in 2012.
