The Greater Accra Regional Branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on collision course with the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party over the re-run of the Okaikoi South Constituency primary.
Mr Ahmed Arthur won the election on April 30, but the result was annulled by a committee who called for a re-run. Mr Arthur was cited for misrepresentation. His sole contender was Madam Vicky Bright.
But the regional branch of the party is contesting the decision by the committee, arguing that the constitution of the party was clear on impersonation. It was argued that if Mr Arthur had made false representation, then he should have bee disqualified, and not a re-run of the primary.
The Regional Chairman, Ishmael Ashittey, in an interview with Asempa News explained that as far as the Region is concern, Mr. Ahmed Arthur is the Parliamentary Candidate for the Okaikoi South Constituency for the 2012 election.
“Personally, I believe Ahmed won, but as we know, the NEC is bigger than myself and the Greater Accra, but when we get to the meeting, I will come out to let them know why I said so.”
Asked when the party is going to meet over the issue, Mr. Ashittey noted that the NEC should have met last Thursday, but the meeting did not come on because most of the members are with the flagbearer, Nana Addo, on his campaign tour.
He added that Nana Addo himself is a member of NEC, and until he comes to Accra, the NEC meeting would not be held.
Mr. Ashittey hinted that he expects Nana and his team in Accra first week of August 2011, saying the National Chairman will fix a date for deliberation on the issue, the moment they returned to Accra.
