Contrary to claims that President John Evans Atta Mills is seeking to relinquish the office of the President to Vice President John Dramani Mahama on health grounds, President Mills on Thursday August 4, confirmed John Dramani Mahama as his running mate for the 2012 general elections. The confirmation came in a crunch National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) held in Accra to discuss what a senior party source called “serious issues arising out of the recently held Sunyani Congress of the party.” The July 8th to 10th, 2011 Congress re-elected second-term-seeking President John Evans Atta Mills as flagbearer for the 2012 general elections. A report by Citi FM said President Mills attended Thursday’s meeting where he doused growing speculations that he intends to resign from office on health grounds and hand over the baton to his deputy, John Mahama. The high profile meeting took place at the Local Government Institute in Madina. According to sources the President had the opportunity “to deflate increasing speculations that his health is deteriorating and that he may not be able to seek re-election next year.” Source: Citi FM
